FINE+RARE, Apr 2022

The white Grand Vin in 2021 is spectacular at Cos d’Estournel. There is fantastic breadth and depth to the palate, the wine reaching to the far corners of the mouth, with electric acidity that brings mouthwatering freshness. White peach fruit, citrus and mineral salinity make for a complex spectrum of flavours and the overall balance leaves the palate fresh. It is the effortless structure of the wine, however, that is so impressive. Just 12.3% alcohol. Blend: 71% Sauvignon Blanc, 29% Semillon

Made in a deeper, richer style, the Grand Vin white 2021 Château Cos D'Estournel Blanc offers a vivid, racy, medium-bodied, concentrated mouthfeel as well as bright, juicy notes of white grapefruit, chalky mineral, and white flowers. It brings this terrific rocky, chalky, mineral-driven style on palate, has bright acidity, and a great mid-palate. It's seriously impressive.

The 2021 Cos d'Estournel Blanc is fabulous. In fact, the 2021 is one of the finest vintages I can remember tasting. Readers will find a white of tremendous stature and sheer palate presence. Lemon oil, chamomile, pear, baked apple tart and light tropical accents are all amplified in this dramatic, racy white from Cos d'Estournel. I can't wait to taste this in bottle.

The 2021 Cos d'Estournel Blanc contains slightly more Sauvignon Blanc this year (71%); proprietor Michel Reybier told me that was because it was more successful in the vineyard. Picked between September 17 and October 9 and matured in 8% new oak, it has a lovely bouquet of citrus fruit, white peach and hints of peony on a nose that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a fresh, vibrant entry, and obviously more concentrated than the Pagodes, with a lively and quite weighty, phenolic finish. This has great potential.
